Northwest Language Academy Moves to Beautiful New Campus

NWLA’s new home is the former Ashingdon Manor Bed & Breakfast in Langley, Village-by-the-Sea on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA .

The Northwest Language Academy (NWLA) has moved its operations and classes from Bayview Corner to the former Ashingdon Manor at 5023 Langley Road in Langley. This new location offers more space and a charming environment for NWLA’s multi-age language and cultural programs, summer day camps for kids, Language of Food events, Travelers' Language Cafés, adult intensives, and private instruction. NWLA also offers cultural excursions and guided travel to foreign destinations. Currently, classes in six languages are available including: French, Italian, Spanish, Bulgarian, Japanese, and Chinese.

Josette Hendrix, NWLA’s founder and director, is still marveling over the amazing results that followed a call from Robert Ellis Crawford, of REC Music Foundation based in St. Louis, Missouri. He had seen an article about NWLA and contacted Josette for more information.

Mr. Crawford was so impressed with Josette’s 12-year effort to create a “Center for World Language and Cultural Exchange” on Whidbey Island, that he decided to play a leading role in helping NWLA become a vital center for better understanding between different cultures; their languages, customs, their music and arts. The REC Music Foundation has purchased the Ashingdon Manor property for use as the NWLA Cultural Center, and turned over its management and direction to Josette Hendrix and the Board of Directors of the Northwest Language Academy.

NWLA is moving into its new quarters just in time for the 14th season of Summer Language Day Camps, which begin on July 19th. Included in this year’s schedule are: Spanish and French for Parents and Preschoolers (ages 2 to 6); Spanish, French, Chinese, and Japanese for children ages 7 to 13; and Summer Intensives for Adults in French, Italian, and Spanish. Camps are led by talented native speakers while participants are immersed in an environment where the target language and culture are taught through age-appropriate, dynamic activities, art, drama, and music.

Currently, a sponsorship campaign is underway, that aims to make it financially possible for an additional one-hundred children to attend these life-changing language camps. More details about the summer language day camps is available on NWLA’s website www.nwlanguageacademy.com.

Hendrix and the NWLA staff will be hosting an open house at the organization’s new home at the end of the summer. There will be tours of the facilities and gardens, details of future development plans, ethnic foods, and live music.
